So I Married An Axe Murderer is a movie that mixes comedy and thriller together. The result: A sloppy, messy movie that contains two different movies in one. This reminded me of I Love Trouble with Julia Roberts and Nick Nolte. That movie surprised me because I thought it did a wonderful job of changing from a comedy to a thriller. This one mixed the two and it didn't work.
One part of the movie, the comedy part, is the part with the Scottish family and all their mishapennings. I didn't laugh once. The part where Stuart Mackenzie (Mike Myers) makes fun of Charlie Mackenzie's (Mike Myers) little brother. I didn't find it funny. I read Roger Ebert's review and he said he laughed out loud at those parts. I'm not sure why it wasn't funny to me either. I think it was because I watched with some of my friends, and they didn't laugh once either. What did Ebert see that I didn't? I'm not sure. But then again Ebert has a warped sense of humor.
The second part is the thriller part. It didn't take itself very seriously, but if it had, it could have been a wonderful thriller. The mother was talking to Charlie about an axe murderer who married a man and then, on their honeymoon, kill him. Charlie doesn't take it seriously because it is in a tabloid. Then, he meets Harriet (Nancy Travis) in a "Meats around the world" store. She is the butcher and he is buying haggis. He falls in love with her and asks if he can help her out on a very busy day. After he gets to know her, he realizes that all the people she told him about were people that had been killed by the axe murderer.
This is very fascinating and kept me on the edge of my seat. Whenever the writers tried to add some humor to the thriller part, I groaned because it really wasn't funny. I'm giving the movie 2 and a half stars, but I didn't hate the movie. I suggest seeing it for the thrill, but you will probably be bored for the first half of the movie. What I recommend is that you rent I Love Trouble and compare the two movies. One did the mixing well, the other messed up.
So I Married An Axe Murderer is rated PG-13. The language is pretty harsh especially when Charlie is talking with his family. There is also nudity where Myers towel falls off and the lady that he is hugging grabs his butt. It's one of the few funny moments because of his reaction... and hers.
